Our goal is to make sure you leave the retreat experience not only with new tools at your disposal, but new connections as well. We’re keeping the participant cap low so you get one-on-one time with all six authors in the house. Jennifer and Julie will lead the daily agenda, but there will be at least four additional published authors present. In the evenings, attendees will take part in roundtable style discussions about their goals and plans for the future. In addition, Jennifer and Julie will be available as time allows to discuss their experiences with the business side of writing and any other publishing-related questions. In the afternoons, individuals will meet with both Jennifer and Julie to discuss 35 pages of the attendee’s work, to be selected by the attendee. In the mornings, attendees will have the opportunity in advance to send out the first 15 pages of their work to be critiqued by the group as a whole in a safe, MFA style critique session. More Than a Beach Read includes up to 50 pages of critique. Writers will work on crafting words and sentences that paint vivid pictures and protagonists, leaving a lasting impression on the mind of the reader. This retreat will focus on creating a page-turning plot that doesn’t sacrifice a memorable voice and authentic character development. * We both love a good beach read and hope that everyone understands that this is only a tongue-in-cheek reference.Ī writing workshop and retreat geared toward writers working on contemporary YA novels and/or YA writers hoping to strike the balance between commercial and literary by focusing on character and voice.
